The Azienda Ospedaliera di Padova (Padua University Hospital, AOP) is the largest medical centre in the North East of Italy. It employs over 5000 staff members. It is an important reference medical centre both at a national and international level, with extensive expertise and collaborations with the most prestigious medical centres around the world. The first class health care provided by the institution is tightly linked with research activities, teaching and development of new technologies at the University of Padua Medical School. The Azienda Ospedaliera di Padova hosts both clinical and research units. Its monitoring laboratories will be important players for the TRANSLINK project providing key personnel, expertise and equipment. In particular: The Clinical Surgery and the Transplant Immunology Units will provide the immunological expertise and will be involved in immunological monitoring of BHV recipients.
In the TRANSLINK Project AOP will carry out the role of Coordinator and investigator in the studies aimed at clarifying the elicited anti-carbohydrate (anti alpha-GAL) immune response. Indeed, the role of AOP will be the overall management and co-ordination of the work packages which form the TRANSLINK project. It is the responsibility of AOP to liaise with WP leaders to ensure the timely completion of the specific tasks and to guarantee that the objectives, outlined in the TRANSLINK project, are reached. In addition to its management tasks, AOP has extensive expertise in xenotransplantation and will be an essential asset in carrying out the proof-of-concept studies in BHV recipients. Its immunological know how will be applied and will contribute to improve the understanding of the premature failure of BHV.
