University of Manitoba (UM)

The Cardiac Sciences Program, comprising cardiac surgery, cardiac critical care, cardiology, cardiac anesthesia and cardiac rehabilitation, was established by the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority in affiliation with the University of Manitoba in 2004 under the Directorship of Dr. Alan Menkis. It is a highly ranked program in Canada in regards to patient outcomes and patient satisfaction. There are over 5000 angiograms, 2400 angioplasties and over 1000 cardiac surgical procedures performed each year at our center. The cardiac surgical procedures include complex cardiac surgery, complex aortic surgery, percutaneous valve procedures and ventricular assist devices. We have a unique cardiac surgical intensive care model with 24/7 in-house coverage by Royal College Certified intensivists many of whom have extra cardiac training (cardiac surgery or cardiac anesthesia). Our center is very active and productive in research from basic science to clinical science and translational studies. Our center has been instrumental in leading change in the area of critical care especially as it relates to research on patients requiring prolonged intensive care post cardiac surgery. Our center is also leading the way in valve research.

The Cardiac Sciences Program in Manitoba will be contributing patients to WP1 as well as assisting with data interpretation/ analysis, manuscript assistance and planning future steps to facilitate the use of improved BHV for heart valve surgery in patients with heart valve disease.
